How to turn off GM and OnStar data collection

On a Chevrolet, Buick, GMC or Cadillac enrolled in OnStar, you can switch off location for OnStar, pause camera data, unenroll, and ask GM to delete what it holds.1, 2

Turn it off

Start with the switch in the car, then the account requests. Which options your car has depends on its model year.1

In the car

InfotainmentPrivacy Settings

From GM's U.S. Consumer Privacy Statement (last updated 17 June 2026) and its Privacy Center.1, 2

  1. Open the Privacy Settings in the vehicle's infotainment system.1
  2. Turn off Location Services for OnStar.GM says some model year 2019 and later vehicles have this option. With it off, most connected services lose access to the vehicle's location.1, 2
  3. On a model year 2025 or newer vehicle, pause exterior camera and sensor data collection in the same Privacy Settings.GM says it may ask for your consent to collect video and measurements, not audio, from the built-in external cameras and sensors.1

Even with location off, GM says it may still collect the vehicle's location in an emergency, such as a crash, a press of the emergency call button, or a high voltage battery overheating.1

In your GM account

GM accountData and Privacy

From the same privacy statement.1

  1. Sign in at experience.gm.com/myaccount/privacy, or at OnStar.com or your vehicle brand's website, and open Data and Privacy.1This is where GM says you can change your consent for exterior camera images and video.1
  2. To get a copy of your data or have it deleted, use GM's U.S. Consumer Privacy Request Form at consumerprivacy.gm.com, or call 1-866-697-7482.GM says it doesn't accept privacy requests by email and may take up to 45 days. An access request also tells you which vehicles GM links to you and what categories of vehicle data it collected.1
  3. To stop marketing from GM, use gmcontactpreferences.com.1

Leave OnStar completely

OnStarUnenroll

From GM's Privacy Center and privacy statement.1, 2

  1. Press the blue OnStar button in the vehicle, or call an Advisor at 1-888-466-7827, and ask to disconnect the vehicle and unenroll.1, 2

GM says this is the way to stop sharing location for any purpose, including emergencies. It may still collect location and vehicle information when the blue button is pressed to restore the connection, and, on electric vehicles, if the high voltage battery overheats.1, 2

How long GM keeps driving data

From the retention schedule in GM's privacy statement, for data from enrolled vehicles.1

DataKept for up to
Precise geolocation3 years from collection1
Seatbelt information6 years from collection1
Driver behavior linked to hard braking, hard acceleration, hard cornering, high speed or late-night driving6 months from collection1
GM defines precise geolocation as location within a radius of 1,850 feet. Longer retention applies where the law requires it.1

What changed since 2024

Smart Driver ended, and an FTC order now sets GM's rules for driving data.

Smart Driver is gone

In April 2024 GM said it was discontinuing OnStar Smart Driver across all GM vehicles and unenrolling all customers, and that its data sharing with LexisNexis and Verisk had ended on 20 March 2024.3

There's no Smart Driver switch left to turn off.

The FTC order

The order, issued 13 January 2026, settles the FTC's allegations. For five years, GM may not disclose covered driver data to consumer reporting agencies. From 180 days after the order took effect, GM must get affirmative express consent before collecting, using or sharing that data, with exceptions such as disclosure to emergency responders.4, 5

It also requires a toggle to disable location collection where the vehicle supports one, and lets every US consumer request a copy or deletion.5

Questions people ask

Can GM penalize me for saying no?

The FTC order bars GM from limiting your ability to withhold or withdraw consent, for example by degrading a product or service as a penalty, unless the data is technically necessary for that feature.5

What does GM still collect after I unenroll?

Under the order, GM may still respond to a call you start from the vehicle, respond to the vehicle's own safety messages, and collect data to fix safety issues or send over-the-air updates, after telling you.5

Does GM sell my data?

GM's privacy statement says some disclosures may count as sales under some state laws, such as identifiers and VIN shared with advertising networks, dealers and card partners. It lists an opt-out of selling for residents of some states.1
